Filmoptimistene (The Film Optimists)
Filmoptimistene is a new and small, yet ambitious, company that imports and distributes feature films all through Scandinavia.
The company was founded by Ola Lund Renolen, a Norwegian with many years of experience in the cinema business. His former positions include being the cinema director of Kongsberg Kino in Norway, as well as the head of programming of the Tromsų International Film Festival.
But there is not just one Optimist ? Ola Lund Renolen has found the others in the community that has formed around the Trondheim Film Club, the Trondheim Cinematheque and Kosmorama, Trondheim?s new international film festival. They are a bunch of genuine film enthusiasts, representing a mix of extensive experience and youthful go-ahead spirit.
A good Optimist Film can be described with three keywords:
Movement
Magic
Enigma
Movement is the elementary particle of film itself. Film is moving pictures. Film is camera movements. Film is movement through cutting. Film is a story that moves. The characters move as well ? they travel in geography, but also between states of mind and between points of view. And all this happens during a few minutes of film ? we move in time. Back and Forth.
A good film moves the spectator.
Magi is what arises from between the cuts, between the spoken lines and in the transition between scenes, but also between the sound and the image, often between the characters and when the mood of a film is changed or transformed.
A good film creates magic between the screen and the audience.
Enigmas are the puzzles of the film medium. The characters may be enigmas to each other. A film may be an enigma to the spectator, but an enigma that gives the story meaning and depth.
A good film presents you with a puzzle that you will still ponder even after you have left the screening.
Filmoptimistene looks for films with good movement, magic and enigmas!
Over the first few years, our ambitions are modest and realistic as regards the number of films we intend to import. Our goal is to search out the interesting films not yet picked up by the more established distributors in the Norwegian market.
But being a Film Optimist has a commitment attached to it. Our long-term goal is to reach every film optimist in Norway and Scandinavia.
And our ultimate goal is not only to reach the existing ones, but also to create new ones!
Are you a Film Optimist as well?
Watch out. Sooner or later, an Optimist film will play at a cinema near you!
